How to choose a commode or toilet aid

A raised toilet seat typically adds 2 to 6 inches of height, so sitting down and standing up take less effort; a toilet safety frame adds armrests to push against; a bedside commode can stand next to the bed at night or, on many models, over the toilet as a raised seat and frame in one.

What to check

  • Weight capacity above the user’s weight – bariatric commodes use wider, reinforced frames.
  • Width between the armrests, measured against the user’s seated hip width.
  • Height range and the size of the seat opening.
  • Fit – round or elongated toilet bowl, and whether a raised seat locks to the bowl.
  • Drop-arm models if the user transfers sideways from a wheelchair or bed.
